Why Humidity Changes the Math

Humidity affects how a given temperature actually feels. A house at 75°F with high indoor humidity can feel warmer and stickier than a house at 78°F with humidity properly controlled. That's because your body cools itself by evaporating sweat, and that process slows down dramatically in humid air. Chasing a lower number on the thermostat without addressing humidity often means running your AC harder for a smaller comfort payoff.

The Sweet Spot

Most homeowners in our area find 75–78°F comfortable when the system is also managing humidity effectively, which is a bit higher than the number people from drier climates expect to need. The exact number that feels right varies by household, but if you're consistently pushing well below 74°F to feel comfortable, it's often a sign your system isn't dehumidifying as well as it should — not that you need a colder house.

Use “Auto,” Not “On,” for Your Fan

This is one of the simplest, most overlooked settings. With the fan set to “On,” it runs continuously, which blows moisture that's collected on the indoor coil back into your home between cooling cycles. Setting it to “Auto” lets that moisture drain away properly, which meaningfully improves how humid the air in your home feels — at no cost to you.

Consider a Dehumidifier for the Peak Months

During the most humid stretches of the year, a standalone or whole-home dehumidifier can take pressure off your AC system, letting you keep a slightly higher, more energy-efficient temperature setting while still feeling comfortable.

Don't Chase the Thermostat

Setting the temperature dramatically lower than you actually want doesn't cool your home any faster — your system runs at the same rate regardless of the target temperature. All a too-low setting does is make your system run longer than necessary once it reaches a temperature you'd have been comfortable at anyway.
